About Kathy,
Katherine “Kathy” Camacho Carr is a nationally recognized midwifery educator, consultant, and advocate with over 48 years of experience in clinical practice, curriculum design, research, and global health initiatives.
As Professor Emerita at Seattle University College of Nursing, Dr. Carr taught and mentored graduate students in nurse-midwifery and nurse practitioner programs and served as Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies. In 2017, she held the Premera Endowed Professorship of Nursing in Health Promotion and Care Innovations, highlighting her leadership in advancing nursing education.
Her career spans practice in hospitals, freestanding birth centers, and home birth settings, always with a focus on serving diverse and underserved populations. She has taught at the Seattle Midwifery School, the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, and as a visiting professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center. She has also directed research and program development at the Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing and helped develop distance-learning curricula for Philadelphia (Jefferson) University’s midwifery program.
Kathy has served in numerous leadership roles, including Vice President (1996–1999) and President (2004–2007) of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). She has consulted for the Clinton Task Force on Health Care Reform, the Bureau of Health Professions, and the World Health Organization. Her contributions have been recognized with prestigious fellowships, including a World Health Organization Fellowship and a USPHS Fellowship in Primary Health Care Policy, as well as her election as a Fellow of both ACNM and the American Academy of Nursing.
Internationally, Dr. Carr has trained midwives and provided consultation in South Africa, India, Vietnam, Laos, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Myanmar, and the Russian Federation. She is a certified trainer in Life Saving Skills (LSS) and Home-Based Life Saving Skills (HBLSS), programs aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality in resource-limited settings.
Her published work includes numerous peer-reviewed articles on midwifery education, women’s health, and public health initiatives. She remains committed to advancing safe, equitable care through education, consultation, and policy analysis.
