December Newsletter: Scaling the Midwifery Workforce

December 1, 2025

The monthly newsletter provides up-to-date events that Grow Midwives Team members are participating in as well as meaningful articles discussed across social media channels on topics that impact maternal child health and the midwifery profession. This month newsletter features Isaac Booth, JD, Atty and Ginger Breedlove, CEO Grow Midwives speaking to Flint, Michigan Hurly Hospital Residents on Contract Negotiation readiness and how to value their worth.

Understanding types of professional malpractice insurance and tail coverage was a topic emphasized by one of the MFM faculty. during the presentation. It is clear that most entry-level healthcare providers are often unfamiliar with the risk around the uncertainty of WHO is covering your malpractice insurance, the type of policy, policy limits, and who pays tail when you leave the job. As shared by this faculty member, a colleague was left with a $60,000 tail that required she take out a second mortgage on her home in order to pay the tail, in one lump sum, within 30 days. Malpractice coverage issues, as well as many ‘template style’ restrictive covenants are key to understanding PRIOR to signing any documents that could be considered legally binding.

Grow Midwives has reviewed well over 5,000 health professions employment contracts over 8 years. We have worked with midwives, WHNP and FNPs, PA’s and some physicians. Our recommendation is you ALWAYS have legal review of an employment contract prior to negotiating in order to determine your leverage to negotiate beyond base, and, to fully understand any risks you may assume should you breach any portion of the agreement.
